Yesterday was our first full day of programming for MLW Summer 2019! Our three smaller programs, Advanced Leadership Seminar (ALS), Bridge, and Journey are in full swing and our delegates are already busy bonding, learning, and of course having fun!
ALS
- ALS delegates started the day off with morning mindfulness in order to be intentional and thoughtful about starting the day.
- Attended a workshop called “Self-ish” with Shanika, which was all about covered Self-Awareness, Happiness, and Self-Development.
- Were introduced to their practicum project which is a project the delegates will work collaboratively on throughout the week. The ALS practicum this year will be a health & wellness fair presented to 35 middle school students in Howard County. The fair will give ALS delegates the opportunity to translate their knowledge of self care and self development, gathered from their time at MLW and through life experiences, into valuable lessons for students who are about to enter the same phase in life- high school. This will also give them the chance to practice public speaking in one the most difficult but rewarding scenarios, speaking with an audience who can walk away at any time.
- Delegates spent time in group meeting completing team-building activities and getting to know one another
- ALS delegates had their first tuning session today. Tuning is a time where delegates meet in small groups with a staffer and participate in goal setting activities, conversations to extend their thinking on workshop materials, and get-to-know activities. Delegates also spend time talking one-on-one to a staff member to ensure they are getting the most out of the week.
Bridge
- Started the day off with an MLW favorite called “Morning Sing” where delegates participant in energizers and camp songs led by the staff in order to get their energy going for the day.
- Delegates learned about their practicum project today. This is a project that they will together on all week long. This year the Bridge Delegates are tasked with filling a time capsule with the intention of that capsule being opened on the 100th Anniversary of MLW. Through the contents of this capsule, the Delegates will answer the questions: who we have been, who are we now, and where are we going as the State of Maryland and as a society. They will be creating original content to put this capsule and presenting on their creations and choices. I hope that you will join us as these Delegates mark their own territory in MLW and Maryland history.
- Attended a workshop on Communication where they learned skills such as active listening as well as how to have “Courageous Conversations” which is a research-based framework for conversations across difference in perspective//identity. Delegates also explored how to use social media to communicate in a way that aligns with the person they want others to see.
